ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

In 2004, the Sarawak Government established a mechanism to formulate policies and directions to ensure systematic and sustainable urban development. Subsequently, the Sarawak Government reorganized the Ministry of Tourism by incorporating urban development functions into the Ministry.

Under the urban development portfolio in the Ministry of Urban Development and Tourism, the Sarawak Government prioritized upgrading and maintaining the quality of river water in cities and major towns. To achieve this goal, the Ministry introduced several key measures in the development of wastewater management systems in Sarawak.

The Sewerage Systems and Services Ordinance, 2005 was enacted in November 2005 to enable the State Government to develop and regulate wastewater management systems.

The Sarawak Government also decided to establish the Sewerage Services Department Sarawak and enforce the Sewerage Systems and Services Ordinance effective October 1, 2007.

In its early establishment phase, the Sewerage Services Department Sarawak operated from a temporary office at Baitul Makmur Building. The Sarawak Government deployed several officers from other departments and government agencies to initiate operations at this newly formed department.

The Sewerage Services Department Sarawak later relocated to its permanent office on the 7th Floor of Wisma Saberkas, Kuching, in 2008, before moving to its current permanent office at No. 1, Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhammad Salahuddin, from 2017 to the present day.

Currently under the portfolio of the Ministry of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, the Sewerage Services Department Sarawak is responsible for implementing all sewerage-related projects in the state. In addition to overseeing and regulating operations, the Department also maintains sewerage systems in accordance with the Sewerage Systems and Services Ordinance.
