Miri Septic Sludge Treatment Plant

NINTH MALAYSIA PLAN PROJECTS

PROJECT

Project Title :

(A) Miri Septic Sludge Treatment Plant

Project Background :

All septic tanks need to be desludged regularly in order to function efficiently. The current practice in Miri is to desludge the septic tank when it is full or blocked. There is also no proper septic sludge treatment facility. The sludge collected from the septic tanks is currently being discharged to drying beds at old Lutong Landfill.

The proposed Plant is located on an 18-acre forested site at Tudan, Miri. It is about 10 km from Miri City and 4.5 km from the nearest residential area, which is Bandar Baru Permy Jaya.

The Plant shall receive and treat the septic sludge collected within Miri City and its outskirts. The treated sludge shall be disposed to Bekenu Sanitary Landfill. This is to enable the regular desludging of the septic tanks and package wastewater treatment units in Miri, thus improving the efficiency of the wastewater treatment facilities in Miri.

The capacity of this Plant is designed to cater for the projected number of septic tanks and package wastewater treatment units in Miri City up to year 2020. Based on the Sungai Miri Environmental Management Study Report, by the year 2010, there will be 30,000 units of septic tanks and hence by 2020 the total of septic tanks is estimated at 40,000 units.
