Centralised Sewerage System For Kuching City (Package 1)

NINTH MALAYSIA PLAN PROJECTS

Project Title

Centralised Sewerage System For Kuching City (Package 1)

Project Background

Package 1 of the project covers an area south of the Sarawak River which is fully developed and densely populated. The works under Package 1 are categorised into 3 main components, namely:

I. Wastewater Treatment Plant
II. Sewer Network
III. Property Connection

I. Wastewater Treatment Plant

The Wastewater Treatment Plant is designed for 100,000 PE (Population Equivalent). It is located on a 10.9 hectares site adjacent to Jambatan Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhammad Salahuddin. The site has sufficient land for future expansion of up to a total of 4 modules that will achieve the final capacity of 400,000 PE.

Wastewater (greywater and blackwater) from the kitchens, bathrooms, wash areas and toilet are collected via a sewer reticulation network and channeled to this treatment plant. The plant processes and treats the wastewater using the activated sludge system. The treated effluent from the plant shall comply with Standard A of the Environmental Quality Act requirement. The effluent shall be discharged into a constructed wet land before it finally flows into Sarawak River.

II. Sewer Network

The Sewer Network is designed based on gravity flow system. The network comprises of the Trunk Sewer, the Secondary Sewer and the Tertiary Sewer.

The size of the Trunk Sewer and the Secondary Sewer Lines ranges from 450 mm to 1500 mm in diameter. The pipes are of reinforced concrete or HDPE material. The Trunk Sewer and the Secondary Sewer will be mainly installed by trenchless method using Tunnel Boring Machines which could either be the Slurry or Augering Method. The Tertiary Sewer is generally of 225mm to 450mm in diameter. It will be mainly installed using the conventional open cut method, with only a small portion using the trenchless method.

The overall length of the Sewer Network under Package 1 is approximately 64.5 km and consists of:

a. Trunk Sewer : Approx. 7.7 km
b. Secondary Sewer : Approx. 5.4 km
c. Tertiary Sewer : Approx. 51.4 km

III. Property Connections

Property Connections involve the collection and re-routing of existing wastewater (i.e. greywater and blackwater) into the public sewer networks. Wastewater from within the property boundaries (i.e. Residential, Shops, Institutions or Complexes) are collected and diverted via sewer within the property boundary to an Inspection Chamber which will be situated next to the property boundary. From the Inspection Chamber it will then be connected to the nearest public sewer. A pumping system may be adopted for properties with limited space. In such cases, electric pumps will be installed in the existing septic tanks or package plants which will be modified to suit. Upon completion of the property connection, the existing septic tanks or package plants will be disinfected and decommissioned.

The total number of properties to be connected under this Package 1 is 2,833 units.
